General Rules
Rules for users and editors of this wiki:
- Blanking pages is considered vandalism and will be automatically reverted, and will result in a 2 hour block for the offender. "Blanking" includes replacing page contents with gibberish or a message, or removing all content. Please note that blanking your page does not delete it; ask a moderator if you want your page deleted.
- Minimodding is not allowed: Do not move someone else's page without permission if you are not a moderator, instead add the deletion template.
- Harassment, slurs, and general disrespectful behavior are not tolerated. It is expected to be respectful to all; harassing or calling people slurs will lead to a ban. Harassment of other users is a violation of the Fandom Terms of Use.
- Using alt accounts as sockpuppets to evade a ban or rig a vote will result in a non-negotiable ban for all accounts involved. Socks will be banned forever; if you rig a vote, all alts will blocked across all of Fandom.
- Edit-warring is not allowed. You must have a valid reason for reverting someone else's edit.
- Editing pages to add nonsense is vandalism and may result in a block for the offender. Please make constructive edits.
- Your FANDOM account must be at least one month old to edit main pages. Despite this, user pages such as their talk or sandbox pages may be edited freely.
Rules for Page Creation
NOTE: If you wish to not be restricted by any of the following rules, see the Backrooms Freewriting Wiki for a rules-free experience.
- All pages must satisfy the following requirements:
- Originality: The concept or subject of the page should be unique and creative, developing an aspect of the lore that has not previously been explored. Copycats/variants of existing pages/concepts are highly discouraged.
- Tone: The page must be written in a mature and professional manner. A strictly clinical tone is not mandatory, but effort should be displayed, with at least a basic level of subtlety and nuance.
- Spelling, punctuation, and grammar (SPaG): The page should be written in fluent English, with few errors.
- Format: The page must be structured and organized in such a way that its content is conveyed clearly and coherently.
- Completion: The topic of the page should be explored and developed with a sufficient amount of length and detail relative to its concept — otherwise, it cannot be considered complete. Work-in-progress (WIP) and unpolished works may not be published, and should remain in your Sandbox until completed. However, this does not prevent you from further expanding a page of yours that is already considered "complete." Furthermore, it is strongly advised that you receive critique from other members of the community (preferably a moderator) before publishing your page. Do not add category tags to sandboxes.
- All pages must fit in the setting. Your page should not seem out of place among the rest; it should relate to the broader setting and connect with existing lore in some way.
- Pages cannot contradict each other. All content on this wiki falls under one canon, and thus continuity in the lore must be maintained across all pages. Do not contradict any lore that has already been established on this wiki or is potentially being planned. In the event that multiple parties have plans that potentially conflict with each other, all parties should hold a discussion and reach a compromise. Moderators hold final say regarding the lore.
- Handle sensitive topics with care. If you wish for your page to include controversial subjects such as politics, religion, mental health, etc., do thorough research on the matter beforehand to ensure that you are not misrepresenting or harmfully portraying it.
- Pages with a theme (i.e. pages that have a div wrapped around the whole page, or use T:CSS) should be checked for readability standards in compliance with FANDOM. Use inspect element or certain websites to check contrast between texts and backgrounds. Also, be considerate with color choices for colorblind users. Do not include bright flashing imagery with no warning in consideration of photosensitive users.
- Article naming rules:
- You may only use the lowest available number in a list. This is to prevent large gaps in lists. The only exception to this rule is if a page is being ported from elsewhere, in which case it should ideally keep the same number so long as it conforms to the rest of the naming rules detailed below.
- Levels, Entities etc. cannot be designated with symbols, emojis, negative numbers, or numbers greater than three digits. This applies to the url, title, and (in most cases) content of the page.
- Sublevels may not have more than one digit after the decimal point. For example: Level 1.1 is acceptable, but not Level 1.11.
- "-rooms" pages, or pages about locations outside The Backrooms, are not allowed: They detract from the focal setting of the lore - The Backrooms itself. The only exceptions to this rule are pre-existing pages such as The Frontrooms and The Broken, as they are important to the lore and are justified within their own context.
- Miscellaneous restrictions:
- Articles generally may not be rewritten without the original author's permission, unless the original author is unknown/uncontactable or their page was ported to this wiki by a third party. Even with permission from the original author, rewrites may still be denied by staff for any reason.
- You may not create personal categories and/or templates. For example, adding a category or template called
Gary's Pages
to your articles isn't allowed. This bloats the category/template list on both individual pages and the wiki itself, as well as being completely unnecessary. If you want to allow readers to view all of your other articles, you can either link your profile in your article's credits, or make the personal template in a Sandbox. Sandboxes can be transcluded like templates by prefixing the sandbox name with your user page, like so -{{User:Gary/Name}}
.
- You may not create personal categories and/or templates. For example, adding a category or template called
Breaking these rules may cause your page to be sandboxed or deleted, or even result in disciplinary action.
