Entity 140, herein referred to as The Storyteller, is the resident entity of Level 906, the Infinite Library. As he is the library's curator and librarian, he is believed to be the source of the library's chaos.
Description
The Storyteller is able to manipulate any form of information, from books to human memories. He is a master of illusion, capable of re-writing his local reality to an impressive degree; this is done primarily through the media of the library. Witnesses have described the Storyteller's abilities as "bringing fiction to reality" - manipulating knowledge, memory, and perception to create a starkly real experience based on fictional events from books.
Wanderers are consistently unable to recall concrete details of their interactions with the Storyteller, presumably due to him censoring their minds. Though broad details are often retained, including aspects of his appearance and abilities, information learned directly from him is rendered irretrievable upon exiting his library.
Due to his abilities, one must doubt any information read about the Storyteller; he may have edited it himself.
Behaviors
The Storyteller manages the state of the library feverishly, constantly shifting its layout in an erratic pattern. This makes exploration of the library extremely difficult, as maps become outdated almost as soon as they are created.
The Storyteller is crafty and cunning, and his methods are deceptive and sly. Psychological manipulation is its forte, alongside a host of supernatural abilities: illusion, shapeshifting, telepathy, telekinesis and teleportation are all common reports. This makes the Storyteller one of the most powerful entities in the Backrooms, though of course, this information may be inaccurate - conflicting information sometimes crops up in reports, such as reports of omniscience contrasting with reports of reliance on books for information.
The Storyteller has a tendency to present itself in a form that its victim will find comforting. Accounts suggest that the Storyteller may read the wanderer's mind to mimic a loved one, to lull them into a sense of security. In other cases, the Storyteller may take the appearance of an archetype the wanderer finds admirable, such as a mage or even a holy maiden. Few have gazed upon the Storyteller's true arcane form, though it is without a doubt that it is entirely inhuman.
The Storyteller is not believed to be capable of physically leaving the library, and has never been observed to do so. His physical influence does not appear to reach outside of the library's confines, though he may project himself spectrally into other levels on occasion. He makes use of the Mail Carrier often, who acts as his messenger.
Relations
Several other entities acknowledge the Storyteller, though most opinions gathered are neutral at best.
- The King of Normality: He is rather fond of the Storyteller, spending a great deal of time in level 906 to hear his stories.
- The Jester: On occasion, he is seen engaging in deep, sometimes philosophical discussions with the Storyteller; an abnormal departure from his typically chaotic demeanor.
- The Keymaster: He seems to regard the Storyteller as a "know-it-all", stating his annoyance towards constantly being corrected on supposed "inaccuracies" in his claims.
- The Alchemist: The Alchemist said on the subject: "I can't believe people compare me to him! He's knowledgeable, sure, but he an't see things clearly like I can. Oh, plus he's a coward - he removes your memories instead of letting you face the consequences for your curiosity." He continued in much the same tone for a half an hour; a transcript of this tirade is available to M.E.G. members upon request.
- The Crimson Wanderer: On occasion, he has warned people of the Storyteller's dangers: "Do not ever go near that thing unless it is imperative." The Crimson Wanderer refuses to speak much more on the subject.
Depictions
Although photography is impossible within level 906, several visitors have created illustrations of The Storyteller based on their personal encounters with him over time. As most perceive The Storyteller uniquely, his true form is unknown, and he seems to prefer that it remains as such.
